Napoleon was in Paris during the French revolution, and when France became a Republic on the 10th of August 1792, he was promoted to the rank of Captain. After defeating the Italians and in 1797 the Austrians, he was made General. In November 1799, he decided to overthrow the French Directory and make himself First Consul of the government. Entitling himself as Napoleon I of France. He soon got bored with this and In 1804, only 12 years after the monarchy was disposed of in the French Revolution, Napoleon secured a vote to change France from a consulate to an empire.
Napoleon had become the Emperor of France.
"From sublime to ridiculousness there is only one step"
Apparently he never said this.

"I'll be back in three days' time. Don't wash"
He did however write this in a letter to his wife Josephine.
